The works of Pierre Perrault are unique in world cinema heritage. They directly capture life and the spoken word, filmed by an explorer and poet who set out to discover aspects of humankind not recorded in books.
In 1972, Perrault went to Abitibi, which had experienced an epic influx during colonization of the 1930s and ’40s. Discovering that the region was being drained of its inhabitants following the failure of this utopian project, he continues his exploration of a society undergoing rapid social and political transformation.
The four films in this box set constitute an indictment of history and power, focusing on a highly colourful character, who speaks out passionately in defence of his land and his people. A significant but almost forgotten chapter in Quebec history.
