Leipzig Filme
On Monday, October 16, 1989, filmmakers Andreas Voigt and Gerd Kroske took their cameras to Leipzig to document the demonstrations happening there that were coinciding with East Germany's 40th anniversary events. Though the filmmakers did not have any plan at that point to shoot a film, they understood the urgency of capturing the events on film. This footage, however, was the start of director Voigt's Leipzig Films that document, from the ground up, the time shortly before, during, and immediately after the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification.

Voigt's participation in "Leipzig in Fall", the documentation of the protests in Leipzig in October and November 1989, established his international reputation. He became one of the most important younger directors to document the political changes in East Germany after unification.
Particularly his five films on the city of Leipzig function as a sensitive seismograph of the feelings of the people.

Mae West - The Glamour Collection
The sound movies were made for Mae West, a performer credited with pulling Paramount Pictures out of almost a hundred million dollars of debt in 1933.

She was a performer and playwright famous for notorious Broadway plays like Sex, for which she served ten days in jail, and The Drag, a play about homosexuality that was allowed in New Jersey but not New York. Audiences loved West and West loved audiences, even through the movie screen. Her characters broke all the rules for conventional female behavior by being sexually aggressive and verbally suggestive; it's obvious that West and/or the women she played loved sex and wasn't ashamed of it. Women were as delighted as men because Mae was in charge. In contrast to the typical siren or vamp, she used not her body but her brains, outsmarting men rather than bewitching them.

Miss West made nine classic-era pictures at Paramount and Universal, and Uni's Glamour Collection corrals five of them, including her first supporting role and her final effort, a pairing with W. C. Fields.

Collection Daniel Kamwa
Daniel Kamwa was born in Nkongsamba, Cameroon in 1943 and later moved to Paris where he also studied cinema. He joined Peter Brook’s comedy troupe as an actor in 1968 before leaving to work in theater, film and television. He directed his first short film, Boubou Cravate, in 1972, and his first feature in 1976: Pousse-Pousse, one of the most popular and successful films shown in francophone Africa at that time.

In 1981 he directed "Notre Fille", which won the prize for the best actor in Carthage in 1982, "Totor" (1994), which won the UNICEF Prize at Fespaco in 1995 and was selected for the Cannes junior section in 1995. He has also directed many documentaries as well as programs on black writers, "Videolire" (1990-91). He directed "Le Cercle des Pouvoirs" (1997).

Memories of Underdevelopment 1968
A very dry title for an absolutely tremendous film from 1968 by the Cuban director Tomas Gutierrez Alea. This transfixing movie, with its mix of freewheeling dialogue scenes, still photo images and documentary footage, conjures up the uncertain mood of Havana just after the revolution. It is something to put alongside the Soviet classic Soy Cuba from 1964, and in fact stars a Cuban actor from that film, Sergio Corrieri gives an outstanding performance as a wealthy idler who long ago allowed his artistic aspirations to wilt. When the Batista regime falls, his family, friends and pampered wife all flee to Miami but for reasons that he cannot quite explain, Sergio stays in the new Cuba, drifting, yet weirdly exhilarated and liberated. He becomes entangled in an messy affair with a 17-year-old, and ponders the fact that he has become like a decadent plant, with huge leaves and no fruit. Cuba, he now sees, has been "underdeveloped" according to the Marxist analysis, and his tragedy is that he can only dimly understand what part he has played in this, and has no clue as to how his own personal and spiritual underdevelopment might be remedied. And yet it is his viewpoint - alienated, yet shrewd and somehow also innocent - that allows us to see the reality of Cuban life, without dogmatism or wishful thinking. The effect is fascinating. This is a must-see.

Having been dumped by his wife for another man, Smith drives off into the countryside, seeking to escape both his own heartbreak and the political upheaval that has turned New Zealand into a quasi fascist state, with leftist rebels battling a far right government. Smith wants no part of such violence, and when he finds a secluded small island with a reasonably priced rent, he thinks he's got it made.

One night, Smith observes a fire in the distance on the mainland, and the following morning a squad of cops arrive to arrest him, accusing him of being a terrorist and of killing a man in a bombing the previous night. Smith is thrown into a cell and left to rot for several days before being informed he is to be tried for treason, a charge which carries the death sentence, but he will be allowed to leave the country if he confesses to his role in the revolution. Smith refuses to offer a false confession and manages to escape on the way to the courthouse, becoming a wanted fugitive...

Although he directed and produced eight feature films during his career, Cornel Wilde was better known to movie audiences as an actor who excelled in swashbucklers (At Sword's Point, 1952) and athletic action roles (The Greatest Show on Earth, 1952). Only now, almost thirty years after his death, is his work as a director being reappraised as some of the most original and compelling work in the American cinema with his fifth feature, The Naked Prey, regarded as possibly his finest achievement.

Bearing similarities to the 1932 film version of Richard Edward Connell's short story, The Most Dangerous Game, a movie that had a profound effect on Wilde as a young boy, The Naked Prey follows a safari guide as he leads his party through the South African jungle. When the arrogant ivory hunter, who is financing the safari, refuses to pay homage to a group of tribesmen for entering their territory, there is bloody retribution. Only the safari guide is allowed to live...if he can outrun a group of armed warriors in pursuit. He is given a brief head start and then the chase begins, one which will test his strength, endurance and cunning repeatedly as he attempts to reach safety...

Crowned King in 1643, Louis's reign is the longest of any European monarch. The film begins in 1715 as the aged King suffers horrible pains in his left leg and is confined to bed. Royal obligations continue, but gangrene sets in and the leg turns black. It becomes apparent that the situation is hopeless and that the King must prepare for death...

Francois (Pierre Richard) begins the story as a commercial photographer - a cheese layout is the first thing we see him shooting. But he also has ambitions as a film maker. Unfortunately, he soon discovers that a screenplay he has written, entitled ''Mirror of the Soul,'' will be considered bankable only if he turns it into pornography.

Even more unfortunately, Francois has a screenwriting partner who must not be told of the change, and a wife (Miou-Miou) who is determined to sabotage his efforts. Many of the film's jokes revolve around the wife's attempts to keep her husband out of dirty moviemaking. When she can't stop him any other way, she auditions for the leading role in his film - and gets it. That slows him down, but only temporarily.

Karin (played by Bibi Andersson) and her husband Andreas (played by Max von Sydow befriend David (played by Elliott Gould), an American archaeologist temporarily working in their town in Sweden to excavate by a local church. David makes a bold gesture by confessing that he has fallen in love with Karin ever since he first saw her. Karin is basically flattered but does not see it as an offer as she is a married mother of two and happily so. Or is she? Her sex life has become stagnant after fifteen years of marriage and every day has become routine. Plus with the death of her mother from not too long ago she has never fully recovered emotionally from the tragedy.

David and Karin begin a romantic relationship in secret but it is not only Karin who is emotionally stricken. David is also a broken soul. He was born in Germany and was able to escape from the wartime atrocities but most of his Jewish relatives were wiped out in the Holocaust, and even as an adult still unable to get over the anger and trauma of war. Will the two find their way together towards happiness or will their secret romance fueled by trauma lead to more broken hearts?

Muratova has declared that this film, her 17th full-length feature, will be her last. Inspired, she has said, by her frustration with overly neat narrative structure, the film’s minimalist plot consists of ‘eternal returns’ to the same situation: a man visits an old school friend, a woman whom he knew a long time ago in school, to ask for advice.

Variations on this visit and the ensuing conversation are repeated throughout the film: each time with a different set of actors and inflections. Shot almost entirely in brilliant black and white, the film features a pantheon of Muratova’s favourite actors as well as many of the non-professional actors whom she has used to great effect in her previous work.
