"The Thin Line" chronicles the decline of an Israeli woman into madness, to the dismay of her two young daughters and her devoted husband.
The film progresses simply and gradually, and it has a homely warmth that is sometimes quite touching. The story is seen through the eyes of the younger daughter, a child of about 8, named Nili. As played by the very solemn Liat Pansky, Nili is a sad, worried, remarkably selfsufficient child, and she tries mightily to hold her family together once her mother begins showing signs of instability. Nili may not exactly grasp what is happening to her mother, but she does have an instinct for the tiny, soothing, supportive things a child can do to help.
