Based on an 1878 play by Alexander Ostrovsky, Protazanov's film tells the story of Larisa Dmitriyevna Ogudalova who falls in love with the Volga ship owner Paratov, who however leaves her after the passionate beginning of their romance. Being a woman 'without dowry', after one year Larisa agrees to marry the boring and conventional Karandyshev (who however believes she has some money!). But then Paratov returns, about to marry a rich woman and enjoying his last few days as a bachelor. However, meeting Larisa again, it soon becomes clear that he still has feelings for her. Paratov enters into struggle with Karandyshev whom he ridicules, and events soon lead to tragedy...
This is the original 1936 version, not the later dub made in 1970.
