After burying his wife, aged hunter and mountain man Sam Monroe refuses to leave his solitary cabin in the beautiful but harsh Rocky Mountain countryside. Although Sam is content to live alone, he is pleased when a female wolf and her newborn pups befriend him after the male of the family is killed by a bull elk. Delighted that the pups take food from his hand, Sam nevertheless keeps a respectful distance from the family, so that the youngsters will grow up properly wild. One afternoon, Sam hears a small plane overhead and when the craft lowers its altitude, Sam peers through binoculars and is angered to see the craft pursuing a lone wolf. Sam then watches helplessly as a passenger from the plane fires at the fleeing animal. Alarmed, Sam hurries to the wolf den of his friends and finds the mother wolf peppered with buckshot, dying as the agitated pups crawl around her. Packing the four young wolves in a large canvas bag, Sam takes them to his cabin...
