When the 1920 Treaty of Rapallo between Yugoslavia and Italy was signed, a significant portion of Slovenian ethnic territory was annexed by Italy. With the rise of Mussolini’s fascist forces in 1922, Slovenian and Croatian communities in those territories became victims of state terror and harsh anti-Slav policies, which in turn brought about the formation of some of the earliest anti-fascist organisations in Europe.
Crni bratje (Black Brothers) was an anti-fascist organisation of Slovenian boys between 13 and 22 years of age in the city of Gorica/Gorizia active between September and December 1930.
Unbeknownst to their parents, they pooled together money to buy rubber stamps to print flyers with anti-fascist poems and messages such as “Death to Mussolini!” and “Down with fascism!”, which they distributed all around town, damaged fascist memorials and took down Italian flags to replace them with the Yugoslav flag.
The mysterious flyers prompted a panicked response from the Italian police, and the boys were arrested between 11 and 17 December. They were detained for weeks, during which time they were starved and tortured until they signed confessions claiming to be linked with subversive Yugoslav forces (which was untrue and designed to serve as pretext for anti-Yugoslav measures).
During the war, most of them continued with anti-fascist activities. Some died in combat, some in concentration camps; some lived; some moved to Yugoslavia, some returned to Italy; but none of them ever received any sort of recognition for their extraordinary courage.
The film is based on a 1952 short story about them by France Bevk.
