Michael Haneke’s first feature film made in Austria and released theatrically in 1989 is a fully accomplished work, that already displays many of the themes, techniques and shock values that would become very familiar in the director’s subsequent works. The target for Haneke’s brutal examination in The Seventh Continent is the bourgeois family unit. The lives of the Schober’s, a well-off successful family, is depicted in minute, methodical detail over three years. The husband Georg (Dieter Berner) has moved to a new job with better prospects, where he is soon expected to replace the boss who gives him so much trouble. The wife Anna (Birgit Doll) fulfils the expected roles of shopping, preparing food and looking after their daughter Eva’s problems at school. She also works in an optician’s with her brother Alexander, who has suffered a nervous breakdown over the death of their mother. In every respect, the Schober’s are a normal family, doing everyday normal things, but one day they decide to destroy everything they have.
