Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol / Black God, White Devil (1964) 2 x DVD9
A key figure in Brazil's leftist Cinema Novo movement of the 60s, Glauber Rocha became a balladeer for the downtrodden with this 1964 allegory about blind faith among peasants in Brazil's poor, barren northeast. "Black God, White Devil" is, at once, one of the most visually effective and artistic examples of the work of Glauber Rocha.

It's the tale of a long-suffering poor farmer in the Northern dry lands of Brazil, Manuel (Geraldo del Rey), who revolts against his status as almost slave labour by killing a land baron. It leads him and his wife on a quest for forgiveness that will take up the rest of the film. Along the way, the two meet San Sebastian, a self-proclaimed saint, who operates outside of the influence of the Catholic church, yet inspires the masses, and Corsico, a delusional revolutionary fighter who rechristens Manoel "Satan" and sets him on a crusade to overthrow the government.
Everyone is sure they are on the side of good.
