Drzava mrtvih 2002
The story is set in the 1990s during the breakup of the SFRY. The film follows the Slovenian, officer Janez, who after Slovenia leaving from Yugoslavia leaves the place where he was born. Despite the fact that the Slovenes offered him a higher rank in their army, he remains faithful to the oath he gave to the Yugoslav Army and goes to Belgrade. With a Macedonian woman, a 10-year-old twins, and a 20-year-old son, he gets a room at a small hotel. He goes through what many of the officers who came from Croatia and Bosnia went through, they lived as refugees in cheap hotels... His wife, becoming ill of nostalgia for the past when they were happy, the son becoming a criminal, and the twins retreating to their world. This is a movie about relationships within the family of a former Yugoslav Army officer, about a time that has stopped, and where only human emotions live. Politics is irrelevant here, while the emphasis is on the inner pain and real situations that are convincingly portrayed by the spiritual states of the main characters. "The State of the Dead" is a film that leaves many people sad, visibly affected by its weight and truthfulness.
