Snippets of lives moving through stark isolation form the narrative of Jose Luis Torres Leiva’s remarkable feature helming debut, “The Sky, the Earth and the Rain”.
In rain and gloom, we follow the lives of three women and a man on a Chilean island. Marta suffers from considerable grief; we never find out exactly why, though there are suggestions that it may be love for her friend Ana. Ana loses her job as a shop assistant and goes to work for a lonely man on a farm. There is also something going on between these two. Nothing exceptional happens with the third woman. She is there as a friend, someone to talk to and take walks with.
The film has very little dialogue. Company is kept largely in silence and the soundtrack is overwhelmed with the sound of heavy rainfall, the ocean, and multitudinous birdsong.
