Based on Michael Houellebecq's partly autobiographical novel, "Whatever" finds Philippe Harel on top form from behind, and in front of the camera, adding scriptwriter and actor to his directorial duties.
Harel dominates the screen as ‘Our Hero,’ a nameless, anonymous, chain-smoking, blank-faced, intensely misanthropic software engineer in his mid-40s.
Our Hero lives alone, earns a better-than-average salary, hasn’t had sex in two years and has no friends. He does nothing at weekends and regards his work as a monotonous chore. On a business trip to Rouen, he is partnered with a younger man, Raphael, who is obsessed with finding a female bed partner but has no chance of getting one. Realising that he has no future, our hero sinks deeper and deeper into depression...
