The orphaned girl Anne is brought up on the farm Storlien. The son of the family, Halldor, marries Anne, but betrays her in favor of a girl of a wealthy family. Furious, Anne burns down the house at the farm. Farmhand Jon has long been in love with Anne and takes the blame for the arson. He serves several years of penal servitude at the Akershus Fortress. When he is released, Anne is waiting for him at the gates. Together they go to America — the land of opportunities.
