In the Swiss village Immensee, on the shores of the Zuger lake, the young Elisabeth is in love with Reinhardt, living also in the village. Reinhardt leaves the village to study music at the Hamburg conservatory. He composes a song cycle for Elisabeth and writes it down in a notebook bound in red leather. His friends discover the notebook when giving him a surprise birthday party. When Elisabeth visits him in Hamburg on the day of his final examination, Reinhart's landlady shows Elisabeth to his room where a young woman is asleep. Elisabeth returns to Immensee and marries the rich Erich.
After three years, Reinhard, now a successful composer-conductor, returns to Immensee for a long summer holiday, between engagements in Rome, Athens and Amsterdam.
