Li is a single mother in her mid 30s who is working at a garment factory and living in a dormitory for Chinese workers in Rome. She has gone there to make a better life for herself and her 8-year-old son, who is still in China living with her father, but must work off the debt she owes to the employers who paid her way to Italy before her son will be allowed to join her. She misses him very much and writes to him and her father frequently, reassuring them and herself that one day she will get the “news” that her debt has been repaid.
Soon, Li is told she is being transferred to Chioggia, a small fishing village on the Venetian lagoon, to work in a cafe. The pub is the hangout of the local fishermen, including Bepi, a handsome old Slav immigrant nicknamed "The Poet." A tender, delicate friendship grows between Shun Li and Bepi. But gossip soon threatens their innocent relationship, a bond that had once transcended two very different, yet not at all distant cultures.

-- Documentary "Closed Sea" / "Mare Chiuso" (2012) by Andrea Segre & Stefano Liberti. In 2009 Berlusconi and Gaddafi signed an agreement to control migration flows between Italy and Libya. Since then, all migrants intercepted at sea by the Italian navy were forcibly pushed back to Libya, where they have been exposed to any kind of abuses by local police. Our documentary film project aims to tell the unknown side of this story: how this 'push-back policy' has been implemented, what actually happened on the boats, what subsequently happened to migrants after their deportation to Libya.
