Irma Vep 1996
Ten years after he made his feature debut with Disorder in 1986, Olivier Assayas decided it was time to turn his attentions to the French film industry for his sixth picture. Written in ten days, and shot in less than a month, Irma Vep provides a mid-nineties’ amalgam of Francois Truffaut's Day for Night and Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Beware of a Holy Whore.

Irma Vep is Assayas at his lightest and most playful – simultaneously a gently satirical dig at the state of French cinema and a love letter to his female star.

Rene Vidal (Jean-Pierre Leaud, 36 fillette), a washed-up, formerly well-respected filmmaker, is hired to direct a remake of the classic French silent film Les Vamipires. He agrees to help it on the condition that Maggie Cheung (In the Mood for Love) plays the lead role.
However, from day one on the set, Cheung senses that the ambitious project is balancing on the fine line between success and disaster; the crew bicker, the director despairs of realising his vision and the producer is on a war path with everyone. Cheung is left adrift with only the friendship of a persecuted lesbian wardrobe mistress to lean on. In the end the director has a nervous breakdown and has to be replaced – with a director who hates the idea of a Chinese Irma Vep...
