The film is based on the life of Czar Ivan IV, the 16th Century ruler whose ruthlessness with his political enemies both at home and abroad earned him the nickname 'the terrible'.
Eisenstein referred to Ivan the Terrible as «a poet of the state essence», thereby stressing the main thing in the Russian autocrat -striving for strength and unity of Russia, and stopping at nothing in doing so. The film covers more than 20 years of reign of Ivan the Terrible (1547-1567), it consists of a number of series narrating key episodes of his life and of the young Russian state.
The first part starts with the inauguration of Ivan IV. Then marriage to Anastasia, conquest of Kazan, Ivan’s disease, death of tsaritsa Anastasia poisoned by the boyars, monarch's reclusion to Alexandrov Sloboda and his return.
The second part of the film is devoted to oprichnina. When Ivan Vassilevich returned from Alexandrov Sloboda the boyars together with the King of Poland Sigizmund laid a plot. Prince Kurbsky, his intimate, defected to the Poles. The scenes of slaughter of the boyars and insubordinate metropolit Philip Kolychev alternate with Ivan’s the Terrible reminiscences of his childhood. The tzar is surrounded by his oprichniks headed by Malyuta Scuratov. Ivan the Terrible revenges Efrosinya Staritskaya, a boyar, killing her son Vladimir who claimed the throne.
