La tavola dei poveri is the tale of a Neapolitan Marquis who has been elected the President of a committee consisting of members of the upper classes and nobility to host a luncheon for the poor.
The irony of the situation is that the Marquis (wonderfully played by Viviani) is himself on the brink of poverty, struggling desperately to keep up his dignity, while he secretly plans to liquidate his estate and see his daughter married.
The situation only becomes more chaotic for the good Marquis, when a hopelessly poor man seeks him out to take care of his fortune (7,500 Lire), which the man has spent a lifetime saving up. The Count reluctantly accepts this responsibility, and then, in a twist of fate, the charity committee barges into the Marquis' house, sees the 7,500 Lire on his desk, and assumes that these are funds for the charity luncheon...
