Le genou de Claire / Six Moral Tales V: Claire's Knee (1970), Carl Th. Dreyer (1965) DVD9
"Why would I tie myself to one woman if I were interested in others?" says Jerome Montcharvin (Jean-Claude Brialy), even as he plans marrying by summer's end. Diplomat Jerome spends his summer in the French Alps with an old friend and author, Aurora (Aurora Cornu). He becomes interested in two vacationing half sisters, about whom he and Aurora engage in philosophical discussions. Already engaged, Jerome nevertheless amuses himself by flirting with Laura (Beatrice Romand), a sixteen year-old who develops a crush on him. But he becomes fascinated by Laura's half sister Claire (Laurence de Monaghan), a blonde beauty with a local boyfriend. Baring her knee on a ladder under a blooming cherry tree, Claire unwittingly instigates Jerome’s moral crisis and creates both one of French cinema’s most enduring moments and what has become the iconic image of Rohmer’s Moral Tales.
