Set in Florence at the turn of the twentieth century. This period, most conservative, is marked by the class struggles that gave birth and strength to the Socialist Party, struggles that were generally suffocated with bloodbaths by the army.
Metello is the story of a young man of the working class, who has grown up practically an orphan due to his father's repeated jailings for anarchistic activism.
As it happens, Metello (Massimo Ranieri) himself becomes increasingly involved in the workers' movement of his time, as he fights back at the social structure that keeps him and his fellow workers locked in poverty.
But, it is not all dreary social-political dramatics. In fact, the film has plenty of romance, as Metello finds himself torn between his wife (Ottavia Piccolo) and their lively neighbor (Tina Aumont).
