Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran (2003) DVD9 and Blu-Ray
This gentle French film, set in early Sixties Paris, about the friendship between a lonely Jewish adolescent and an elderly Muslim shopkeeper marks the return of Omar Sharif to the screen after a long absence.
Thirteen-year-old Momo (Pierre Boulanger) lives with his depressed and very critical father (Gilbert Melki). He has no recollection of his mother, and his dad constantly compares him unfavorably to an older brother who left home.
Moses responds to this pressure in a variety of ways. He breaks his piggy bank in order to try to hire one of the prostitutes who works across the street. He courts a pretty girl who lives nearby.
The one person in the world who appreciates his desire and his lust for life is the "Arab", Monsieur Ibrahim (Omar Sharif), whose small grocery is open from eight to midnight every day including Sunday. Gradually, their relationship grows and they embark on a long journey to Ibrahim's homeland - a journey that will have a profound effect on both their lives...
