This movie describes the last eight days of the life of Renato Caccioppoli, illustrious and eccentric mathematician, who committed suicide on May 8, 1959. He was a fascinating and discussed person in Naples' political and cultural life. A member of the Italian Communist Party, he claimed himself to have the anarchist Bakunin among his ancestors. During the fascist period he was incarcerated in a mental hospital.
A disillusioned and tormented mathematician spends the final days of his life in Naples. Abandoned by his wife, alienated by his colleagues and fellow communist party members, Caccioppoli lives in disenchanted solitude, until his final act: suicide.
