Niskavuoren Naiset (Women of Niskavuori) was directed by Valentin Vaala, one of the foremost directors of the pre-WWII Finnish film industry.
For years, the tradition that the eldest sons of the Niskavuori family must marry women of wealth has been strictly upheld. Dutifully, Arne Niskavuori (Tuno Palo) weds the rich but not terribly attractive Martha (Irja Lautia). This leads to a prickly situation when Arne falls in love with the pretty young village schoolteacher Ilona (Sirkka Sari). The subsequent scandal permits director Vaala to deliver a scathing indictment against small-town gossips and hypocrites.
