Amores perros / Love’s a Bitch (2000) 2 x DVD9 and Blu-Ray Criterion Collection

Amores perros 2000
Amores Perros is a sprawling tapestry of emotion, weaving together three powerful stories about the hopefulness and pain of love. It's a stunningly made film, raw and authentic, with the ability to get way under the skin.

The three stories revolve around a fatal car crash. First we have Octavio (Garcia Bernal), a young man in love with his pregnant sister-in-law Susana (Bauche). To raise money to run off with her, he "borrows" his brother's (Perez) pittbull for a series of vicious dogfights. Second is the story of Daniel (Guerrero), who leaves his wife (Almela) for a model (Toledo) whose gorgeous looks are injured in the car crash ... and whose beloved little dog gets lost under their apartment's floorboards, causing Daniel to question his decisions. The third story centres on El Chivo (Emilio Echevarria), a dog-loving homeless man and former communist terrorist now working as a hitman, but still obsessed with the daughter he abandoned for the cause.

There are more stories and plots woven into the film's structure and, like most of these films, it's assembled out of time sequence, returning again and again to the pivotal accident. The result is absolutely stunning, reflecting the cyclical nature of love and romance, the wandering attentions, self-doubts, misplaced loyalties and most importantly the way true love opens us up to both true joy and dangerous vulnerability.

Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Project No. 3
If three is enough to form a pattern, we can now anticipate that Criterion will be releasing a new volume of the World Cinema Project every 3-4 years. And if the pattern continues, each volume in the set will be more than worth the wait.

The World Cinema Project, spearheaded by Martin Scorsese's The Film Foundation, states its commitment “to preserve and present marginalized and infrequently screened films from regions generally ill equipped to preserve their own cinema history.” This mission involves extensive restoration of films whose elements exist in a perilous state as well as the distribution of such films to a wider audience, both in theaters and on home video.

These Criterion sets comprise only a portion of the films promoted by The World Cinema Project. Earlier volumes spotlighted works from Senegal, Taiwan, Turkey, Kazakhstan, The Philippines, Thailand, Morocco, and several other nations. Volume Three spans four continents, six nations, and five decades – a typically eclectic selection for this ambitious series.

The Wind (1928) DVD5

The Wind 1928
Swedish director Victor Sjostrom's [Seastrom] most famous and finest work, based on the novel by Dorothy Scarborough, is now recognised and hailed as one of the all-time great silent movies.

The Wind is a masterpiece in writing directing and acting. The film is dragged by the performance of Lillian Gish and without her, it would not be considered the classic it is today. The best performance of 1928 by a bonafide star of the silent era.

The Wind tells the tale of Letty Mason (Gish) who has travelled from Virginia to Sweetwater Texas to live with her cousin and his family. Upon her journey to her cousin Beverly, she is disturbed by the constantly strong winds around her. She is informed by a fellow passenger that such winds are known to drive women crazy. As she tries to become accustomed to her new life, multiple suitors (Sourdough and Lige played by William Orlamond and Lars Hanson) come her way to take her hand in marriage, but that constant bothersome wind continues to disturb her...

Pierrot le fou (1965) 2 x DVD9 and Blu-Ray Criterion Collection (+ Reissue 2020)

Posted In: .Other movies, Comedy, Crime, Drama, Romance

Pierrot le fou 1965 Criterion Collection
Jean-Luc Godard's Pierrot Le Fou is not a film largely concerned with plot, but the story follows Ferdinand (Jean-Paul Belmondo) as he leaves his bourgeoisie lifestyle and wife behind him to go on the run with ex-lover, Marianne. The couple somehow get involved in murder and arms-dealing along the way as well as spending some time alone on an uninhabited island. Eventually though it all comes crashing down and the road trip ends in disaster.

Yet this is no normal road trip: genius auteur Jean-Luc Godard’s tenth feature in six years is a stylish mash-up of consumerist satire, politics, and comic-book aesthetics, as well as a violent, zigzag tale of, as Godard called them, “the last romantic couple”. With blissful color imagery by cinematographer Raoul Coutard and Belmondo and Karina at their most animated, Pierrot le fou is one of the high points of the French new wave, and one last frolic before Godard moved ever further into radical cinema.

Cast: Jean-Paul Belmondo, Anna Karina, Graziella Galvani

Operation Bikini 1963
In August 1944, an elite underwater demolition team (UDT) commanded by Lt. Morgan Hayes (Tab Hunter) rendezvous with an American submarine captained by Emmett Carey (Scott Brady). The UDT's mission is to destroy a sunken American sub off "Bikini Island" before its top-secret equipment, an advanced radar system, falls into the hands of the Japanese.

An artificial conflict arises between the team and the sub's crew (including an uncredited Dick Bakalyan), inexplicably resentful of their presence, and this dominates the picture's first half. Later, the team reaches the island and joins forces with local guerillas, including Reiko (Hungarian-born Eva Six), who falls in love with Hayes.

Mouchette (1967) DVD9 Criterion Collection, Blu-Ray Artificial Eye, Blu-Ray Criterion Collection

by movieworld on December 24th, 2020 at 15:01
Posted In: .Other movies, Drama

Mouchette 1967
The bleakest of Bresson's meditations on misery, MOUCHETTE feels every bit the logical extension of his previous AU HASARD BALTHAZAR, but here with specific focus on the realm of human suffering. Abused and overburdened at home, ridiculed at school by classmates and teachers alike, the life of country schoolgirl Mouchette is presented on no uncertain terms; the world for her is a living hell. In the title role, Nadine Nortier is the apotheosis of Bresson's actor/model doctrine. Her one-off performance is heartbreaking, but also honest and raw, stripped of artifice to a degree rarely seen in child actors. Her finest moment lies in the joyful release of the carnival scene, where an oppressive world takes a backseat to bumper cars and a boy, and from under her downtrodden facade emerges genuine warmth. But with the arrival of her alcoholic father, this exuberant reprieve is cut unceremoniously short, and Mouchette slides back into her role as supreme pariah of 60s cinema. Bresson had always possessed a fascination with the human spirit under desperate times (he had, after all, spent a year in a POW camp during World War II), but by 1967, this was coupled with an underlying cynicism present in the 65-year-old director's films. That cloud hangs over MOUCHETTE right up through the cold and uncompromising final scene, a testament to the devastating punch minimalism can pack, and an all-around unshakable slice of filmmaking.

Ivansxtc / Ivans xtc. (To Live and Die in Hollywood) (2000) Blu-Ray Arrow

by movieworld on December 24th, 2020 at 14:33
Posted In: .Other movies, Drama

Ivansxtc 2000
Filmmaker Bernard Rose has long been fascinated with the work of Leo Tolstoy. Ivansxtc, released in 2000, is the second of five adaptations of the Russian literary giant’s work that the British director has brought to the screen. The film repurposes the Count’s malleable 1886 novella The Death of Ivan Ilych as a turn of the millennium Hollywood fable. The source has already been teased into a bona fide masterpiece in the form of Akira Kurosawa‘s Ikiru. Rose (Candyman, Immortal Beloved), ever the maverick, wrestles it into something spikier and more uncompromising.

Opening with the death of its titular protagonist, ivansxtc goes back in time to chart the final days of hot-shot Tinseltown agent Ivan Beckman and his fast-paced, wheeler-dealer lifestyle, which will ultimately lead him to an early grave after a shock cancer diagnosis.

Director: Bernard Rose
Cast: Danny Huston, Peter Weller, Lisa Enos
Country: UK, USA

Cookie's Fortune 1999
The sweet assurance and guerrilla wit of Robert Altman's vintage ensemble films makes a serenely captivating return with "Cookie's Fortune." In this seamlessly copacetic treat, Altman once again dreams up a well-rounded community of symbiotic oddballs, then effortlessly lures the viewer into their world.

In this relaxed and amiable Southern gothic comedy of manners, director Robert Altman explores the tattered yet durable spirit of community in Holly Springs, Mississippi. When Jewel Mae "Cookie" Orcutt (Patricia Neal) decides to commit suicide in order to be reunited with her deceased husband, she sets in motion a disturbing series of events in the small town. Her estranged niece Camille (Glenn Close), who is directing Oscar Wilde's play Salome at the Presbyterian Church, finds the body and, in order to avoid scandal, makes it look like a robbery...
