The Scarlet Letter (1926) DVD5

The Scarlet Letter 1926
Great Swedish director Victor Sjöström's The Wind (1928) is regularly hailed as one of the very greatest silent films. However, The Scarlet Letter, a movie he made just two years earlier with the same screenwriter, Frances Marion, and the same main stars, Lillian Gish and Lars Hanson, tends to be strangely overlooked. Yet, his adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic novel is another masterpiece.

Hester, a New England maid of Puritan background, to please her father, marries Roger Prynne, whom she does not love. During her husband's long absence she walks the woodland lanes with her pastor, the Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, and they soon fall in love. When a child is born to her, she is condemned to wear upon her breast the brand of Adulteress and refuses to divulge the name of the child's father. With patient resignation she faces the jeers and insults of the stern Puritan population and fights to retain her child...

Les demons / The Demons / Die Nonnen von Clichy (1973) 2 x Blu-Ray Wicked-Vision Media (1 Movie, 4 Cuts)

Les demons 1973
Is it possible that Ken Russell's The Devils might have inspired Jess Franco to shoot The Demons? Yes, it is, but if it was indeed the case, it hardly matters. Why? Because excluding a few very small early projects in Franco's body of work the subject matter has an entirely different function. Essentially, whatever the chosen subject matter might be Franco uses it only as the starting point for the creation of a unique ambience that would provide his film with its direction and identity.

In The Demons, we open upon the trial of a woman being tested involving pokes, prods, and water evaporation leading to her being burned at the stake where she curses Lady de Winter (Karin Field), grand inquisitor Jeffries (Cihangir Gaffari), and their right-hand man Renfield (Alberto Dalbes). Turns out the old hag has two daughters living in a convent, Kathleen (Anne Libert) and Margaret (Britt Nichols), who are charged with being witches after exploiting in sins of their own flesh. Now, the two girls must save themselves and exact revenge against those who killed their mother.

Director: Jesus Franco (as Clifford Brown)

Toni (1935) Blu-Ray Criterion Collection

Toni 1935
Fans of Jean Renoir will rush to see something ‘new’ from the great director; this very different Renoir picture sees him filming in the South of France, among regional laborers that bring their Italian and Spanish customs with them. It’s a tragedy about a crime of passion, all shot outside of a film studio, without big stars or glamorous trappings.

Shot on location and using mostly untrained actors, the movie begins as Toni (Charles Blavette) arrives in the South of France from Italy, looking for work. He finds lodging with Marie (Jenny Helia) and lands a job in a quarry. Some time later, he has become Marie's lover, more out of convenience than passion. But when he meets the Spanish Josefa (Celia Montalvan), he falls deeply for her; they share an incredibly sensuous scene in which he plucks a wasp stinger from her back and sucks out the poison. Unfortunately, Toni's monstrous boss Albert (Max Dalban) rapes Josefa, and she winds up marrying him instead. The melodramatic story culminates with money, a murder, and a tragedy.

Wildlife 2018
"I feel like I need to wake up. But I don't know what from, or to," mother tells her bewildered son in this drama about family, masculinity and female agency in 1960s America topped by a trio of towering performances.. This strikingly styled film marks the directorial debut of actor Paul Dano, who also co-writes the script with his partner Zoe Kazan.

Based on the novel by Richard Ford "Wildlife" stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Carey Mulligan as Jerry and Jeanette Brinson, who’ve recently moved to small-town Montana with their teen son Joe (Ed Oxenbould). The American Dream is proving elusive for the middle-class family, in fact they’re flirting with poverty. Tough times fracture the bond between man and wife, and the chasm widens when Jerry suddenly announces he’ll be away for months because he’s taking a low-paying, dangerous job fighting fires.

Star Spangled to Death (2004) 4 x DVD9

Star Spangled to Death 2004
One of the last surviving giants of avant garde American cinema, Ken Jacobs spent 50 years assembling this six-hour epic video commentary on a half century of US mischief, mistakes and occasional downright madness.
Begun in the '50s, reworked and reshaped for both the national bicentennial and the Reagan '80s, and then "finalized" (or so Jacobs claims) shortly after the Iraq invasion, Star Spangled to Death often seems like it will last forever. (That's a compliment, natch.) Divided into three lopsided parts, the film is an oversized ode to incompleteness or, more specifically, to the last century's cultural detritus. The bulk of the film consists of archaic clips ranging from racist ethnographic studies of 1950s Africa, a CBS doc on scientists experimenting on rhesus monkeys, musical-short subjects, B&W cartoons of questionable integrity and, finally, footage of life during the war on terror. Jacobs shows most of these in their entirety, but only sometimes without direct commentary. When time comes to show all of Nixon's "Checkers Speech," he smears it with snickering, chatter, clips of Eisenhower, a lengthy insert on one man's love for his cat and, when attention turns to silent mascot Pat, sounds of orgasmic moaning. He goes even further with a fluffy campaign doc on Nelson Rockefeller, though Jacobs knows no amount of graffiti is required when showing the jawdropping "Going to Heaven on a Mule" number from the 1933 musical Wonder Bar--wherein a blackfaced Al Jolson plays a dying slave who ascends to a gaudily overwrought heaven featuring other blackfaced whites. Throughout, Jacobs shows pop culture as being at the mercy of society, and society to be terminally sick, racist and cripplingly religious, particularly when ruled by the film's revolving door of national supervillains (Rockefeller, Reagan, Dubya). Individual segments of Star Spangled to Death aren't exactly subtle, particularly when it turns to textual inserts (which he sometimes uses subliminally). But Jacobs lets the audience make the connections, especially as the canvas gets bigger and bigger. Eventually it seems like there's no way to stop the damn thing, and perhaps there's not.
So enjoy!

The Hit (1984) Blu-Ray Criterion Collection

The Hit 1984
If you like Euro-crime and haven’t seen this one you’re in for a real treat. English killers are on the road in Spain, executing a hit on a ‘Supergrass’ who’s spent ten years in protective custody. The brilliant cast give the criminal twists extra credibility. The suspenseful show is one of Stephen Frears’ best, and it builds to a highly satisfying conclusion. It’s also the feature debut of Tim Roth, and as such shouldn’t be missed.

After ratting out his criminal associates on the witness stand, Willie Parker (Terence Stamp) has spent ten years under police protection in a small town north of Madrid. That’s when freelance hit man Braddock (John Hurt) shows up to take Willie to Paris, where the mob is waiting to repay him for his treachery. The pitiless Braddock is assisted by Myron, a street thug on his first big job, who has a bad habit of talking too much (Tim Roth of Rob Roy and Pulp Fiction). In swapping out their getaway car, the killers end up kidnapping a young Spanish bargirl, Maggie (Laura del Sol). Braddock is a fastidious detail man who thinks nothing of killing a stranger to ensure the security of the mission. Thanks to missteps made along the way, he comes realizes that they have little chance of reaching the French border. The only question is, who to kill? And when?

Claudine (1974) Blu-Ray Criterion Collection

Claudine 1974
In the early 1970s, while producers were creating heroes (and antiheroes) out of black characters with violent pictures, 1974's "Claudine" emerged as a softer understanding of struggle and survival. Written by Tina and Lester Pine, the tale features a mother of six kids trying to find a way to support her family, deal with employment, and care for her own mental health as she embarks on a new relationship.

In Harlem, Claudine (Diahann Carroll) is exasperated, living to raise her six children while secretly working as a housecleaner to help support her welfare benefits. She finds some comfort in Rupert (James Earl Jones), a garbage collector extremely attracted to her, actively trying to land a date. While the pair connects during the never-ending bustle of their domestic lives, Claudine is pushed to the brink of sanity as she navigates the welfare system, Rupert's problems, and the unruly lives of her children, with Charles (Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs) growing to resent his parent as he begins to challenge social issues on his own.

Nanook of the North (1922), The Wedding of Palo (1934) and other Films of Arctic Life 2 x Blu-Ray Flicker Alley

by movieworld on January 6th, 2021 at 18:06

Films of Arctic Life
Robert J. Flaherty's Nanook of the North is considered one of the greatest films of all time.

Nanook follows an Inuit (not named Nanook in real life) and his family as they live, hunt and trade in north Quebec the way their ancestors have for centuries. With no plant life, the Inuits rely entirely on hunting animals, a diet that produces stretches of hunger and hardship in the trying climate. To see Nanook in action is to enjoy a fascinating view of a lifestyle distant from ours.

Knud Rasmussen and Friedrich Dalsheim's The Wedding of Palo is the more intimate and clearly the more relaxed of the two films. In it life is still difficult for the Eskimos, but nature never looks as dangerous as it does in Nanook of the North. More often than not the focus of attention is also on the Eskimos' feelings and emotions rather than on their daily struggle for survival.

Flicker Alley's two-disc Blu-ray set collects numerous other anthropological and educational films about the time and region, as well as the indispensable "Nanook Revisited", a 1988 return to the community that reflects not only on how the people have changed but on Flaherty himself.
