Ride in the Whirlwind (1965) & The Shooting (1966) DVD9
In the Spring of 1965, when a struggling young director named Monte Hellman, a rag-tag group of actors, and a small production crew ventured into the Utah desert to film a pair of low-budget westerns, Ride in the Whirlwind and The Shooting, no one expected that the results would turn out so marvelously. Both films would be shot simultaneously and both would be financially backed by B-movie mogul Roger Corman, with whom Hellman had previously worked as director and as editor. The Shooting would be lensed first, with an 18-day shooting schedule. After that, there would be a week of prep-time for Ride in the Whirlwind, then another 18 days to get it in the can.

Ride in the Whirlwind:
The first thing we see is the robbery of a stagecoach by a gang led by Blind Dick (Harry Dean Stanton). It doesn’t go so well, as the stagecoach driver is shot and one of the gang is captured and hanged. As three traveling cowhands, Vern (Cameron Mitchell), Wes (Nicholson), and Otis (Tom Filer) pass through the countryside, they stumble upon the scene of execution. Later they stop by a remote cabin to camp for the night, and the inhabitants offer up their hospitality to the travelers. Unfortunately, the residents turn out to be Blind Dick and his gang. Bright and early the next morning, the local sheriff and a team of vigilantes lay siege to the area and they don’t really make any distinction between who might be in the gang and who might not. Both Otis and the gang are soon killed. The team of vigilantes, committed to their idea of justice, then set out after the escaping Vern and Wes, who lack supplies and soon enough even horses. The surviving pair come to the realization that the only way they can avoid hanging is to become criminals themselves.

The Shooting:
Bounty hunter Willett Gashade (Warren Oates) returns to the mine where he has been trying to make an honest buck, only when he ties up his horse and mule, he notices a grave - the grave of his old friend who he had left behind to tend the site. Then someone starts shooting at him. He dives for cover, and sees that the would-be assassin is his other friend Coley (Will Hutchins) who stops firing when he realises who he is aiming for. Soon, Will has the story from him - someone gunned down their companion and he didn't see who it was. But then a new character enters the tale...
