Set in the late 1500s, the movie concerns the disparate world views of a crass ruler, Hideyoshi (Tsutomu Yamazaki), and the culturally refined tea master, Rikyu (Rentaro Mikuni). Rikyu is portrayed as a man thoroughly dedicated to aesthetics and perfection, especially in relation to the art of tea. Hideyoshi Toyotomi, whose mother was a peasant, fought his way up to become the most powerful man in the country. Hideyoshi thought of the tea ceremony not as an art but as a show of refinement and power. He has been studying the tea ceremony for five years when our struggle begins.
Rikyu ultimately is compelled to express an opinion on Hideyoshi's military plans. This leads to tragic consequences.
