Samskara / Funeral Rites (1970) DVD5

The word samskara means ritual in English. The movie takes place in a street in the village Durvasapura. The majority of the residents there are Brahmins whose leader is a young scholar named Praneshacharya. Praneshacharaya is a vedic scholar who holds moksha (spiritual liberation) as his life's ultimate goal. Hence he marries an invalid woman and look after her. The Brahmins in the village are very strict in following their traditions and despise anyone who reject their traditions. Such a character is Naranappa, who is an alcoholic, non-vegetarian and living with a prostitute named Chandri. The movie starts with the death of Naranappa. According to customs, the dead body must be cremated as soon as possible but none wants to do it for the fear of being tainted associating with Naranappa. The Brahmins assign Praneshacharya to come up with a solution for the problem...
