Shadows (1959) DVD9 Criterion Collection
Cassavetes drops us into the world of three bohemian siblings living in New York. Hugh (Hugh Hurd) is an African-American jazz singer struggling to build his career as he and his manager Rupert (Rupert Crosse) bounce around clubs in the city and travel to Chicago, Philadelphia, and elsewhere in order to make a living. His younger brother Ben (Ben Carruthers) is a leather-jacketed carouser whose aspirations to be a trumpet player are undermined by his chick-trolling and bar-fighting antics with his buddies. Meanwhile, light-skinned baby sister Lelia (Lelia Goldoni) is reaching out for independence from the safe embrace of family and falls into a romance with a white aspiring writer (Anthony Ray) who experiences serious misgivings when he discovers her race.
