Is an epic presentation following three generations of two rival families in the remote Siberian logging village of Elan. The Solomins are the wealthy masters (wealth being highly relative in a tiny, walled village), at least until the far-off Bolshevik revolution alters the power structure in ways they can react to, but not really understand. The Ustyuzhanins are poor, and while the elder father toils endlessly on a road through the forest—a road that appear to go nowhere—young Nikolai Ustyuzhanin dreams of the glorious revolution rumored to be underway. The families will struggle against one another for decades, even as romance between members ties them together. In the decades to come, they and their descendents discover that the seemingly pointless road was pointing the way to the future, for better or worse. Oil-rich Siberia will take on a new importance for the fledgling Soviet Union, and the Ustyuzhanins won't let the future pass them by, even if it means razing their village to the ground.
Siberiade covers more than six decades of Russian history beginning in the early 1900s all the way to the late 60s. Each decade is reserved for one of the numerous main protagonists in this story as they indirectly symbolize the evolution of the Soviet state. From the victory elation in the post war years, to the modernization of the Far East, and finally the "superiority" years from the Brezhnev era, this is indeed an ambitious project which creates a very realistic portrait of the now defunct USSR.
Yet Siberiade is more than an immense historical epic. It is a hauntingly beautiful spectacle reminiscent of the finest works of visionary filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky (whose Andrei Roublev was co-written by Konchalovsky). Through cinematographer Levan Paatashvili's lens, the Siberian wilderness becomes a mesmerizing universe unto itself, whose forests and swamps are populated by near-mythical characters. Tied to ancient tradition, these spirits seek to protect the countryside from the ravaging forces of time and technology.
When a rural village is invaded by an oil-drilling crew that encroaches upon their hallowed burial grounds, generating conflict between ancestral reverence for the earth and government-ordained industrialization, Siberiade comes to an explosive and unforgettable climax.
