Close-Up is the true story of Hossain Sabzian, a poor, underemployed, divorced, father of two. He is obsessed with the cinema. A fan of Makhmalbaf films, Sabzian had a chance encounter with a well-to-do woman named Mrs. Ahankhah during which he persuaded her that he was Makhmalbaf. Soon Sabzian, posing as Makhmalbaf, wangled a visit to the lovely, well-furnished home of Mr. and Mrs. Ahankhah and told them it was an ideal location for his next film. He started rehearsals with their adult son and borrowed a modest amount of money from them. But within a few days, the Ahankhah family realized Sabzian was an impostor and had him arrested.
A journalist wrote a column about the incident that was read by Kiarostami. The director quickly put together a crew and set about to film the trial as well as restage some of the events. The re-enactments were done with a twist: Sabzian, the Ahankhahs, and the others involved played themselves.
