Life's rough for old-time New York shipyard workers, but they take all the pleasure they can in wine, women, and song. After a long night of carousing, Bill Roberts (Bancroft) sees a woman fling herself into the bay. He jumps in after her and pulls her out, preventing her suicide and introducing himself to Mae (Betty Compson, Hard Boiled Mahoney), the most gorgeous woman he's ever likely to meet. He falls in love instantly, but they have only one night together before he's off on another ship. Mae is determined to make sure they have an adventure neither will forget.
