Yuri Ilyenko's masterpiece, The Eve Of Ivan Kupalo. Along with Sergei Urusevsky, Ilyenko changed the face of Soviet cinematography (most notably for his work on Parajanov's Shadows Of Our Forgotten Ancestors, to which he contributed greatly), and this film is arguably his finest achievement. Images of extraordinary strangeness and intoxicating potency abound in every scene, and the visual invention running through the film is nothing short of astonishing.
Adapted from Nikolai Gogol's stories, the film relates the tale of Piotr; too impoverished to marry his beloved (the lovely Larisa Kadochnikova, who also appeared in Parajanov's Shadows), he makes a deal with the satanic Basavriuk in exchange for untold riches. But these riches come at a price...

Hi, wonder if you can answer me this question, since I cannot find this information anywhere: does this DVD have the film's original mono soundtrack, or is it a 5.1 remix one?
There soundtrack 2.0.
Unfortunately, the sound is ruthlessly damaged noise reduction, and this is clearly seen in the two rollers "Before and after restoration" in places where the sound is gradually moving from a wonderful, pure original (obviously rewritten with the original tape) in the "restored".
