The story follows the rise and fall of Flo Ziegfeld, broadway producer extraordinaire. We see the highs of lows of Ziegfeld’s life in “biz” and in love. William Powell plays the ambitious but chronically overextended Ziegfeld. His career begins in 1893 at the Chicago World's Fair, where he promotes strongman Sandow (Nat Pendleton). Ziegfeld's competitor is Billings (Frank Morgan), whose latest discovery is French musical hall singer Anna Held (Luise Rainer). Ziegfeld conquers the heart of childlike Held, and sets her up in Broadway.
