Lev Andreyev (William Powell, She's a Sheik), a Russian immigrant directing in Hollywood, is casting a film about the Bolshevik revolution and needs an extra for the role of a general. While leafing through piles of head shots, his eyes fall on the picture of a man he once knew back in the old country a long time ago (Emil Jannings, Anna Boleyn). Andreyev insists the man be hired for the role, but the motivation for casting him, however, has more to do with old scores than with realistic performances.
The Last Command is based partially on the life of General Lodijensky, a real Russian leader who fled to Hollywood following the rise of the Communists.
