They Were Expendable (1945) DVD9
They Were Expendable is based on the real-life heroics of PT Boat squadron, and the defense of the Philippines from December 1941 through April 1942.
They were the men who served with the Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron in WW2 (forerunner of the PT boat) that were instrumental in forestalling the crushing defeat of U.S. forces in the Philippines. Lt John Brickley (Robert Montgomery) has faith in the usefulness of the small destroyers but his hot-headed deputy Lt J.G. "Rusty" Ryan (John Wayne) is skeptical. At first the navy only uses them to ferry supplies and to relay messages, but when Bataan and Corregidor fall to the Japanese, the boats demonstrate their efficiency in combat and play a crucial role in the evacuation of General MacArthur at the end of the failed campaign.
