This flamboyant cross between Fellini and Peter Greenaway is the debut film of one of the most famous Romanian stage directors, Silviu Purcarete.
Somewhere in Palilula tells the story of Serafim, a young doctor assigned on short-term at the hospital in Palilula, a phantom town lost somewhere on the national map, following the death of the previous pediatrician.
Palilula, an authentic Garcia Marquez' Macondo (from One Hundred Years of Solitude), it’s a place where the insignificant coexists with charming things; in the hospital, the patients are perfectly healthy, and one of their favorite entertainments is to assist at the dissections in the morgue. The rest of the population is charming and imbecile at the same time, forever isolated in drunkenness, feasting, and orgy. None of the members of the small community – whom the doctor meets in bizarre circumstances – seem to have any occupation at all, let alone practicing their jobs.
The changes from the political regimes, the deaths, the fires and floods, none of these major terrible changes of the world disturb the inhabitants of Palilula.
Serafim gradually adapts to the life in this world and ends up belonging to it, even without wanting.
