Lord Hallam Holland (Ed Stoppard) and wife Agnes (Keeley Hawes) return to London from Washington in 1936, taking up residence at 165 Eaton Place at the start of the three-episode run:

• "The Fledgling"
Agnes calls on Rose, now working at a staffing agency, to help her find good help. Among the new helpers is young footman-in-training Johnny (Nico Mirallegro), who has a secret in his past. Lady Persie (Claire Foy), Agnes' sister, arrives from Wales, and Lady Maud Holland (Eileen Atkins), Hallam's mother, arrives to take charge of the household. The Hollands throw a dinner party for Mrs. Wallis Simpson.

• "The Ladybird"
New parlormaid Rachel Perlmutter (Helen Bradbury), a Jewish woman escaping Germany, starts a friendship with Mr. Amanjit (Art Malik), Lady Maud's secretary. Lady Persie follows chauffeur Harry (Neil Jackson) to a fascist rally, and eventually gets involved in a march that turns violent. Agnes learns she's pregnant.

• "The Cuckoo"
The household takes in a motherless child, and it leads Hallam to a family secret. Lady Persie attracts the attention of German ambassador Von Ribbentrop, who is under surveillance. There's an emergency in the Holland house as everyone's listening to King Edward's abdication speech.
