In the band of well-known waltz composer Joseph Lanner (Horbiger) there's an ambitious young violin player, Johann Strauss (Wohlbruck), whose new musical ideas however don't appeal to the older man. When the differences between the two composers increase, Strauss forms his own band and some of Lanner's players leave with him. Among them is drum-player Gustl (Fritsch), who nevertheless is in love with Lanner's daughter, Katti (Muller). The ensuing rivalry between Lanner's and Strauss' bands soon develops into a veritable war of the waltzes, which of course leads to problems between Gustl and Katti. And when young Queen Victoria wants to learn about the waltz craze in Vienna and invites Strauss' band to England, Katti sets out with her own girl band to prevent Strauss from playing. She almost succeeds by locking him in, but she doesn't expect one thing: that Gustl would take on the role of Strauss...
