Yara 1998
Like Yilmaz Arslan's first feature Passages, this fable about loss of cultural identity is harsh, uncompromising and sometimes hard to take. Hulya (Reynaud), a Turkish girl raised in Germany by her divorced father, is taken back to Turkey for what she thinks is a vacation - to find herself dumped on her uncle and effectively imprisoned. The first half details her attempted escape, heading for the German border by any means available and trampling on every Turkish/Islamic tradition she encounters en route.

On this journey she meets different people who rescue her life, sometimes in the very last minute. She ends up in prison and finally in a psychiatric hospital. In this hospital time and personal needs of the heroine have ceased to exist. All of a sudden Hulya's family appears and even her german girl friend who has organized this meeting in the hospital. Hulya is discharged an can return to Germany. In Germany, however, the heroine's odyssey rapidly proceeds to its end with her final loss of identity.
