Zhou Enlai -- the first premier of the People's Republic of China, who presided over the rise of the Communist Party and the growth of the Chinese economy -- is the subject of this epic biographical play.
While Mao may have been the overall leader and trendsetter in the Chinese Communist Party and in the 1949 revolution, Zhou was the Party's incredibly astute chief strategist and prime minister who, in the culminating moments of his career, worked in the 1970s with Henry Kissinger to engineer Richard Nixon's epochal visit to China.
After a counter revolutionary coup, Zhou Enlai works to stabilize the country's economy and take control of the central government. But when he's stricken with cancer, he must summon all his energy to stand up to the leftist Gang of Four faction.
