With this bracing drama, made at the climax of the anti-apartheid movement, director Euzhan Palcy issued a devastating indict­ment of South Africa’s racist government — and made history in the process, becoming the first black woman to direct a Hollywood studio film.

A Dry White Season follows the story of Ben du Toit, a high school history teacher and happily married father of two, whose eyes are gradually opened to the repressive nature of his government. The movie is set in June 1976, beginning just days before the South African police opened fire on a crowd of black students marching peacefully against a new school curriculum. Several children were killed, and the incident marked the beginning of the Soweto Uprising, a month or more of violence in which hundreds of black children and teenagers were killed, and thousands more injured. Gordon Ngubene, the du Toit family gardener, comes to Ben for help when his son, Jonathan, is arrested in the initial protest. Ben is skeptical at first that the police would arrest a young boy without good reason, but when Gordon, too, disappears into the clutches of the sinister Special Branch, he begins to ask questions...

This anthology aims to act as a catalyst in the formation of a transversal vision of Quebecker and Canadian cinema. The organization of the three discs presents the program on the basis of valuing chronological interlacing and permutations. This baroque fragmentation allows angles and reliefs that emphasize the presence of archetypes in the discontinuous narrative. Coteries associated with the chapels of experimental films and video art, through the purists defenses of celluloid and digital visions, have deliberately been addressed to be distilled, transmuted and sublimated. This optic contamination will act as visual immunotherapy for the visionary viewers.

The Tragedy of Othello 1952Seeped in irrational hatred for Othello the Moor (Orson Welles), Iago (Micheal MacLiammoir) sets out to destroy him and fellow officer Michael Cassio (Michael Laurence). Othello has recently married the beautiful, young Desdemona (Suzanne Cloutier, voice: Gudrun Ure), much to the regret of the foolish Roderigo (Robert Coote, voice: Orson Welles), who wanted her for himself. Iago uses Roderigo in his plot to disgrace Cassio, and than persuade Othello that Desdemona is unfaithful.
Orson Welles' adaptation of William Shakespeare's legendary Othello retains the core of the classic play, but it introduces the viewer to its characters and the reality in which they exist in a rather unusual fashion. Indeed, the film opens up with a funeral procession which reveals how it would end -- the bodies of Othello and his bride are carried away, while the evil Iago is placed in a giant cage. Welles then sends the viewer back in time and reassembles the events preceding the deaths of Othello and Desdemona.

Criterion's release features brand new 4K restorations of the 1952 and 1955 versions.

James A. Fitzpatrick Traveltalks Shorts Volume 3The third and final volume of these incredible travel shorts explores pre-war New Orleans, post-war West Germany, and everywhere in between. Discover the world at that particularly catastrophic moment in history, and the effects it had all over the globe.

The three disc set literally goes all over the map, even from film-to-film. If you sit down to watch several shorts in one sitting, you can go from Brazil and New Zealand to the Andes and the Taj Mahal within an hour. In a world where jet set travel had not yet reached its peak, and focus was on World War II and postwar recovery, seeing places like these before the nightly matinee must have been stunning.
Today the films still impress, though more for the efficient time capsule they provide. The Traveltalks recall life at a slower pace. There are fewer cars and people, and you can even see that the cities have cleaner, clearer air. Overviews of big cities like Chicago and New York are juxtaposed with scenic shots of National Parks and natural wonders, the urban spots in particular almost appearing to be from another world because of the distance of time.
