At the beginning of The Third Secret, a prominent London psychiatrist (Peter Copley) dies of a gunshot wound to the head, an apparent suicide. His 14-year-old daughter Catherine (Pamela Franklin), however, suspects he was murdered and asks one of his patients, Alex Stedman (Stephen Boyd), to investigate. Though Alex -- a famous American journalist who explains his country's foreign policy to British television viewers -- is reluctant at first, he soon realizes that his emotional insecurities will be on the rampage until he discovers the truth. As Alex interviews a self-doubting painter and art gallery owner (Richard Attenborough), a smug judge (Jack Hawkins), and a highly nervous secretary (Diane Cilento), we begin to suspect that the truth is more complicated than it initially seemed...

Ralph Taggart (Ray Teal), a farmer, arrives in an area where he chose to settle with his wife and his son Kent (Tony Young). Ben Blazer (Emile Meyer) accompanied by his son Rusty (Peter Duryea) and his men spread panic among the Taggarts during which the whole clan of Taggart shot dead, except Kent miraculously escaped the massacre. Ben Blazer also injured during the stampede, was taken into town to the doctor by his son. While the doctor is trying to heal the old Ben, Kent broke into the doctor's office and shot Rusty Blazer before being mastered by the sheriff. The latter, considering that Kent was in self defense, free Kent and advises him to leave the area, but old Ben determined to avenge the death of his son rusty, brought in a hired killer, Jason Jay (Dan Duryea), to whom he promises $ 5,000 if he brings Taggart dead or alive. Then begins a long chase through the Apache country....

Pudovkin joined Mezhrabpom-Rus film studio in 1925 and, as his first job, was assigned to make a popular science film about Ivan Pavlov's work. A full year in the making, this scientific documentary concentrates on the behavioral studies conducted by Prof. Ivan Pavlov. The laboratory dogs used in Pavlov's research don't seem too happy about it, and as a result this film might be hard to take for the more sensitive viewers (the vivisection sequence is particularly rough). The progress of the research is detailed with charts and graphs, hardly the "cinematic" touches one might expect from Pudovkin. Interestingly, Mechanics of the Brains was released two years before the results of Pavlov's studies were printed in book form.

With a 16mm camera, and minimal resources, and no payment for your technicians, you cannot achieve very much in commercial terms. You cannot make a feature film and your possibilities of experiment are severely limited. But you can use your eyes and your ears. You can give indications. You can make poetry.

So said Lindsay Anderson, one of the founders of the Free Cinema movement, which existed to give a platform to young filmmakers who wanted to work outside the industrialised mainstream. Although the six Free Cinema programmes shown at London's National Film Theatre from 1956-9 made a big critical splash, and many of their creators went on to high-profile careers in either fiction (Anderson, Karel Reisz, Tony Richardson, Claude Goretta, Alain Tanner, cameraman Walter Lassally) or documentary (Mike Grigsby, Robert Vas), the original films have been far more discussed than actually watched.

This is for the same reason that they had difficulty getting shown in the first place: they were almost entirely short documentaries, typically 20-50 minutes long. Britain already had a venerable documentary tradition, but the Free Cinema films stood apart from this, not least because they were unashamedly auteurist - to cite a phrase that had only just joined the critical lexicon.

Prisoners of War focuses on three Israeli soldiers, captured in Lebanon 17 years before, and their families (and nation) who suddenly have to cope with strangers coming home. These are broken men, twisted and torn by years of torture and isolation.

Season 1: After 17 years in captivity, Israeli soldiers Nimrode Klein, Uri Zach, and Amiel Ben Horin return home to the country that made them national icons. They work to overcome the trauma of torture and captivity while settling back into their interrupted family lives. Meanwhile, the military psychiatrist assigned to them finds discrepancies in the soldiers' testimonies, and launches an investigation to discover what they are hiding.

Season 2: Picking up where season one left off, we discover that Amiel Ben Horin is not only alive, but he has been living as a Muslim in Syria, a leader in the terrorist organization that brutalized him for years. Has he turned? In these emotional, tense and densely plotted episodes, former prisoners of war Uri and Nimrod and their families continue to pick up the pieces of their lives; Amiel, now known as Yussuf, struggles with his identity and allegiances; a lifelong pursuit of vengeance comes to a climax; and a top-secret intelligence operation known as Operation Judas is put into motion with potentially devastating consequences.

Sidewalk Stories 1989
The main protagonist in Sidewalk Stories is a young artist who spends most of his time in the financial district of New York City. He draws sketches of strangers and with the money they give him he buys food and water. He sleeps in an abandoned building somewhere on the outskirts of the city.

The artist's life changes dramatically when he witnesses the murder of man in a black alley. Next to him he discovers his little daughter and hides her from the killers. When the police arrive, he quietly leaves with her.

The man plans to leave the girl on a busy street so that someone else can take care of her, but changes his mind and brings her to his place. Then, despite the bitterly cold weather, he begins taking her with him to the financial district. Her drawings prove hugely successful.

Around the same time the artist befriends the kind owner of a tiny clothing store. She quickly falls in love with the couple and invites them to have dinner with her. The artist visits her place and for a short period of time imagines being in a serious relationship with her, but then realizes that she belongs to an entirely different world.

Directed by Charles Lane in 1989, Sidewalk Stories is a charming silent film which falls somewhere between Charlie Chaplin's classic The Kid and Michel Hazanavicius' recent Oscar winner The Artist. Though not as well polished and inventive as these celebrated films, it very much matches their energy and sense of humor.
