On March 2, 1896, the Italians embarked on the final European conquest of an African nation, Ethiopia. With brilliant military intelligence and gallant generals at the helm, united and willed, the Ethiopian people rose their way to triumph over the Italians at the Battle of Adwa. The battle of Adwa is a symbol of African liberation for Africans of all nations. The event ignited a lasting flame of hope, of freedom and independence in the hearts of African people.
In 1996 Ethiopians celebrated the centennial of their ancestors’ defeat of the foreign army that invaded so that Italy could colonize Ethiopia. Haile Gerima decided to document the commemoration. The decisive Battle of Adwa is the focus of both the celebration and, hence, this film.
Director brings together Ethiopians from very different backgrounds and allows them to tell the story of the battle from their own perspective.
