Veteran film title and graphic designer Saul Bass discusses 10 of his famous title sequences.
Most of his work was done for independent director-producers, which included Otto Preminger, Stanley Kramer, Martin Scorsese, Robert Aldrich, Stanley Kubrick, John Frankenheimer, Spike Lee, Oliver Stone, and Alfred Hitchcock.
The work of Academy Award-winner Saul Bass covers the full range of the design spectrum, from feature film titles, corporate logos and product design to making his own films about perception and creativity, design and communication. In this film, he combines his favorite subjects with his interest in the cinema by presenting a selection of the feature film titles he designed and made famous. Mr. Bass talks about the evolution of his thematic title sequences that open and close many of the great productions of a generation of Hollywood directors and producers. His designs involve the search for the elusive visual statement that instantly communicates the film's intent while generating audience interest. Among the film titles discussed are WEST SIDE STORY, THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM, A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE, AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS, and others.
