This is Francesco Rosi’s 1984 film version of Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen.
Sevilla in the 1820s. A young peasant girl asks for brigadier Don Jose at the barracks. Hearing he will only be back with the changing of the guards, she leaves. Don Jose arrives just as the women working in the cigar factory come out. All the men quickly gather around Carmen, a popular gypsy. Rejecting all advances made to her, she approaches Don Jose and throws him the flower of her corset. Bewitched by this tantalising woman, Don Jose allows her to escape when she is arrested for her involvement in a fight at the factory. He becomes her lover and follows her into her world of smuggling and highway robbery... and freedom, which Carmen prizes above all. Her refusal to sacrifice any part of her liberty to Don Jose's increasingly obsessive jealously ultimately drives him to murder.
