Provocative, unsettling, yet darkly comic, Butterfly Kiss was the startling debut of director Michael Winterbottom (Wonderland, 24 Hour Party People), which received rave reviews on its release, and witnessed a great turn by Amanda Plummer (Pulp Fiction) and Saskia Reeves (Red Riding).
Eunice is a killer who has a punishment complex and a pathological obsession with Judith, a lover who jilted her in the past. Eunice continues to repeat the same pattern, searching for Judith in gas stations and trying to find a piece of music that she thinks is about love, but isn't a love song in its own right. Whenever she doesn't find Judith, she kills the attendant. That is, until she meets Miriam, who doesn't treat her as coldly as the others but takes an interest in the song she is looking for, and in Eunice herself. Miriam follows her even after she covers herself in gas and stalks away, and after that they are inseparable, Miriam having promised herself that she will never leave Eunice. Eunice steals a car and Miriam gets in it with her, thus beginning their strange, violent road trip.
