This film adaptation of Penderecki's first opera, DIE TEUFEL VON LOUDUN (The Devils of Loudun), was captured with its original cast shortly after the Hamburg State Opera world premiere.

Based on the novel by Aldous Huxley (later adapted by Ken Russell in THE DEVILS), this intense opera about the real-life French priest Urbain Grandier (Andrzej Hiolski) deals with themes of religion, sexuality, and madness.
