Edition Filmmuseum 93 - ... und deine Liebe auch & Sonntagsfahrer
The construction of the Berlin Wall on August 13, 1961, was a pivotal break in German history and had to be justified in movies produced by East Germany's DEFA studio.

The 2-disc DVD set presents for the first time films by reknowned directors that tried to address topical events.

Two of the films even include documentary footage shot in the summer of 1961.

DVD 1:

... und deine Liebe auch (And Your Love Too) (Frank Vogel, 88 minutes)
Eva, a young girl, still very carefree and playfully superficial, is wooed by two brothers. One of them, Klaus, is a smooth operator who works as a taxi driver in West Berlin and who is never short of cash. Ulli, the other brother, is somewhat reserved and, at first sight, not as attractive as Klaus. Eva is taken with Klaus, who becomes her first lover. But when she falls pregnant by him, he refuses to face up to the responsibility.
On August 13, 1961 Klaus suddenly loses his source of income in West Berlin - the Berlin wall now is between him and his former place of work And Ulli now stands at the border with a weapon in his hand. In this precarious political situation, Eva reflects on her private life anew. She discovers that there is no real love between her and Klaus. Instead, she feels increasingly attracted to Ulli.
Klaus is arrested while attempting to flee and has to go to prison. How will Ulli respond to this and to Eva, who makes no secret of her feelings for him?

Schaut auf diese Stadt (Look at this City) (Karl Gass, 80 minutes)
This polemical documentary-using rare authentic images and newsreels from both sides-justifies the erection of the Berlin Wall on August 13, 1961.
Fast-paced montages represent West Berlin as the frontline of neo-fascism, terrorism and neo-colonialism, against which the peaceful city of East Berlin requires an “antifascist defense”.

DVD 2:

Sonntagsfahrer (Sunday Drivers) (Gerhard Klein, 84 minutes)
“Sunday Drivers” is an uneasy road comedy in which disgruntled “bourgeois remnants” set out from Leipzig for Berlin, where they plan to sell their cars and cross to the West. Having left on Aug. 13, 1961, the day that construction of the wall began, they are thwarted when the roads to Berlin are blocked. Like “And Your Love Too,” it has a jazzy score, much talk of impending war and an ending with the chimera of a rational, radiant Communist future.

Materna (Frank Vogel, 15 minutes)

Der grosse und der kleine Willi
(Gerhard Klein, 32 minutes)
