Flying Tigers 1942
This old movie made during World War II (1942) is a good example of Hollywood's successful attempts to drum up support for the war, using one of its biggest stars. It is a fictionalized account of the exploits of the American Volunteer Group, also known as the Flying Tigers, flying combat missions against the Japanese in China during the war. Wayne, playing Capt. Jim Gordon, is the leader of one of the three squadrons operating at that time.
The men are the usual stereotypes in such B-war films. There's, of course, the guy from Brooklyn and the guy from Texas. There's the coward who gets a chance to redeem himself and get back his self-respect (Edmund MacDonald). The womanizing braggart, Woody Jason (John Carroll), a cynic fighting only for the money and glory who sees the light before the end of the third act and gives up his life for the cause.
