Directed by Nicholas Ray in 1950 and based on the novel of the same name by Dorothy B. Hughes, In A Lonely Place introduces us to a jaded Hollywood screenwriter named Dixon Steele (Humphry Bogart, who worked with Ray one year prior on Knock On Any Door) who is in need of new work. During a meeting at a bar with his agent (Art Smith, The Painted Hills), Dix meets a hat-check girl named Mildred (Martha Stewart, Johnny Comes Flying Home), who comes home with Dix to read him a book for a movie she thinks he may like. The next morning Dix is awoken by an old friend who happens to be a police detective, Burb Nicolai (Frank Lovejoy, House of Wax), who takes Dix downtown and informs him that Mildred has been killed overnight and thrown out of a moving vehicle. Is Dix the one behind the murder? Dix's attractive neighbor Laurel Gray (Gloria Grahame, The Bad and the Beautiful) isn't so sure, even as she starts to fall under his mysterious spell...
